NEW DELHI — The Secretariat and Lok Bhavan observed Earth Hour on Saturday by switching off lights in buildings that were already empty for the weekend, according to a press release issued by the Environment Ministry at 4:47 PM.
The coordinated blackout, which affected approximately 2,400 light fixtures between 8:30 and 9:30 PM, was hailed by officials as a demonstration of the government's commitment to sustainable practices. "This sends a powerful message," said Joint Secretary K. Venkataraman, speaking from his fully illuminated residence. "When we act together, even for sixty minutes annually, change is possible."
The initiative required three separate inter-departmental meetings, two budget allocations totaling ₹4.2 lakh for coordination expenses, and a 47-page implementation framework titled "Guidelines for Temporary Reduction of Illumination in Government Premises (Earth Hour Protocol)." Ministry sources confirmed that the framework will be reviewed and updated annually, with provisions for a steering committee to monitor compliance.
"We explored switching off lights for two hours, but the logistical challenges proved insurmountable," explained Dr. P. Subramanian, Director of the newly formed Earth Hour Compliance Cell, which operates year-round with a staff of six. The cell's primary function is to ensure that participating buildings resume normal lighting operations at precisely 9:31 PM.
A senior official noted that the Secretariat's air conditioning units remained operational throughout the hour to prevent damage to sensitive equipment. "Climate action must be balanced with practical considerations," the official said, requesting anonymity as he was not authorized to discuss operational protocols. "The servers cannot be compromised."
The Environment Ministry announced plans to commemorate the achievement with a daytime seminar on Monday, featuring presentations on the initiative's success. Organizers confirmed that all fourteen conference rooms will be fully lit for the event, which is expected to conclude by 5 PM.
