WASHINGTON—The U.S. State Department confirmed Tuesday that it is “closely tracking” the kidnapping of American journalist Shelly Kittleson in Baghdad, employing the same high-resolution observational techniques it used while watching the militia-led security vacuum expand across Iraq since early 2024.
Department spokespeople noted that their current posture of “monitoring the situation” is consistent with the agency’s long-standing policy of maintaining a detailed, real-time record of every predictable disaster it fails to prevent. Kittleson, a freelance journalist who has covered the region for years, was reportedly taken by an Iran-backed militia, a development that officials say they saw coming as early as the 2025 partial embassy evacuation.
“We are following these reports with the utmost attention,” said one official, speaking from a secure briefing room where several screens displayed a live feed of regional tensions reaching a boiling point. “Our commitment to observing the consequences of ignored travel advisories has never been stronger. We have a very clear view of the situation, just as we had a very clear view of the threats that led to this specific outcome.”
Security analysts pointed out that the militia group Kataib Hezbollah, identified as a primary suspect, has a rich history of suspending and resuming operations based on how much “embarrassment” they wish to cause the Iraqi government. The State Department confirmed it is also tracking that embarrassment levels are currently hovering at ‘Moderate to High.’
“It is standard procedure,” the official continued, gesturing toward a file cabinet containing decades of meticulously documented escalations. “When a citizen is taken in a zone we labeled 'Do Not Travel' four hundred times, we immediately move from 'General Concern' to 'Specific Tracking.' This allows us to issue a statement that acknowledges the event occurred without accidentally suggesting we have a plan to stop the next one.”
At press time, the Department reaffirmed that it would continue to provide Kittleson’s family with regular updates regarding how closely the tracking is currently being conducted, provided such updates do not interfere with the ongoing tracking of the regional war currently occurring on all fronts.
