VENICE — Teatro La Fenice management confirmed this week that a political ally of the Prime Minister will assume the music director position previously held by Arturo Toscanini and Claudio Abbado, citing the appointee's extensive background in ending "left-wing cultural hegemony."
The appointment, which begins a four-year term in October 2026, has been championed by the superintendent as a victory for "youth and women." Officials dismissed staff protests regarding the incoming director's "slim" conducting record, noting her highly successful 2022 stint as an advisor to the national Minister of Culture.
"We cannot let a lack of major opera house experience stand in the way of promoting government allies," said an institution spokesperson, addressing the workers' ongoing refusal to cooperate with the new leadership. "The 14,000 people who signed a petition against this appointment fail to understand that institutional autonomy and musical merit are secondary to advancing the administration's political agenda."
At press time, management was reportedly seeking a mediator to help the opera house recover €140,000 in canceled season ticket sales before the conductor's first official downbeat.
