DUBAI — Following an Iranian attack on the Kuwaiti oil tanker Al Salmi at a Dubai port facility, officials from Kuwait, the UAE, and several observer nations moved quickly to assure stakeholders that the incident would not affect their commitment to describing the region as stable, sources confirmed Monday.
The fully loaded tanker was struck while docked, prompting warnings of a possible oil spill and immediate statements from the Kuwait Oil Tanker Company emphasizing that all crew members were safe and that contingency plans were being reviewed by committees tasked with reviewing such plans. "The safety of our personnel remains our top priority," said a company spokesperson, reading from prepared remarks that did not address the tanker itself.
Regional analysts noted that the attack marked the fourth such incident in eighteen months to be characterized as isolated. "Each of these isolated incidents is unconnected to the others," explained Dr. Ahmed Al-Mansouri, director of the Gulf Institute for Maritime Security Studies, an organization formed in 2019 to study why previous maritime security studies had proven insufficient. "We are monitoring the situation closely to ensure it remains isolated."
The UAE Ministry of Energy released a statement confirming that oil exports would continue uninterrupted, as would ministerial statements confirming that oil exports would continue uninterrupted. "We have robust systems in place," the statement read, before listing several systems and noting that their robustness was under continuous review. Insurance premiums for vessels transiting the region have risen 340 percent since 2022, a figure the ministry's statement did not mention.
Meanwhile, the International Maritime Organization announced it would convene an emergency session to discuss adding the incident to the agenda of its next scheduled meeting in November, where delegates are expected to express concern and establish a working group to determine whether concern is warranted. "We take these matters seriously," said an IMO official, speaking on condition of anonymity because he was authorized to speak publicly.
At press time, the Kuwait Oil Tanker Company confirmed that cleanup operations were progressing smoothly and that the Al Salmi would resume operations once a committee determined what operations meant in this context.
