SRINAGAR — The Jammu and Kashmir administration expressed profound disappointment Tuesday after the High Court quashed the detention of an elected legislator who had been held under the stringent Public Safety Act since September 2023 for the offense of accusing a Doda Deputy Commissioner of misconduct.

"The court has unfortunately failed to grasp the severe threat to national stability," said an administration spokesperson. "If we allow democratically elected representatives to go around pointing out administrative flaws, the entire fabric of public order could unravel. The Public Safety Act was designed to prevent exactly this kind of existential crisis."

The administration noted that since 2019, invoking the PSA to neutralize the grave security threat of political opposition has been a highly effective standard operating procedure. However, officials lamented an ongoing, frustrating pattern of the High Court repeatedly overturning these detentions simply because they lack sufficient legal grounds.

"We are reviewing our legal options," the spokesperson added. "It is vital to the region's security that local bureaucrats remain entirely shielded from basic verbal accountability by the people elected to represent the public."
